Benefits of Clean Water

I’ve been drinking out of the faucet for the last 20 years. Why is it bad now?

Let’s take smoking as an example: Some people have been smoking for the past 20 years. We all know your health will deteriorate if you continue to smoke. Your water isn’t as clean as it was 20 years ago, and it continues to get worse every day.

Every chemical we produce eventually makes it into our water supply. While some of these chemicals help to get rid of those annoying mosquitos and crabgrass, those same chemicals also make their way into our water sources. Carcinogenic industrial waste such as chromium 6 (remember Erin Brockovich?), disinfectant byproducts such as trihalomethane/chloroform (byproduct of chlorine reacting with organic and inorganic matter in the water) are now just part of a chemical cocktail that is commonplace in our drinking water.

The buildup of these chemicals generally does not result in getting sick over a short amount of time so the urgency to remove them is sometimes lost. They do however pose a very serious risk over the course of time. Luckily, because our bodies have an amazing ability to regenerate cells, when we start to reduce exposure to the amount of chemicals we to start to heal (there’s been evidence of improvement with lungs and heart once someone quits smoking).
